Sugar Type Conversion Comparison

Different sugars fill a measuring cup at different weights. This table shows the sugar-specific reference values used in the calculator. These values help convert measurements; they do not make every sugar interchangeable in a recipe.

How to Convert Sugar Measurements

Convert grams to cups

Cups = Grams ÷ Grams per Cup
Example: 250 g granulated sugar ÷ 198 = 1.2626 US cups.

Convert cups to grams

Grams = Cups × Grams per Cup
Example: 2.5 US cups granulated sugar × 198 = 495 grams.

For dry weight conversions, 1 ounce = approximately 28.35 grams and 1 pound = approximately 453.59 grams. For the US culinary volume used in this chart, 1 cup equals 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.

US Cups, Metric Cups and Imperial Cups

Recipes from different countries may use different cup sizes. Since sugar is converted from volume to weight, the gram amount in a cup changes when the cup volume changes. The converter lets you choose the cup standard used in your recipe.

Granulated sugar cup-size comparison
Cup Standard Cup Volume Used Approx. Granulated Sugar Weight When It May Appear
US culinary cup240 mL198 gAmerican recipes
Metric cup250 mL206.25 gAustralian and metric-cup recipes
Imperial cup284 mL234.3 gSome older UK or Commonwealth references

Metric and imperial cup sugar amounts on this page are scaled from the stated 198 g per 240 mL granulated sugar standard. Crystal size, packing and moisture can introduce small real-world differences.

How to Measure Sugar Correctly

Granulated sugar, powdered sugar and packed brown sugar are measured differently in recipes. When precision matters, a kitchen scale and the correct sugar type provide the most consistent result.

Choose the sugar the recipe names. Granulated, confectioners’, brown, coarse and liquid sweeteners behave differently and do not share one universal cup weight.
Weigh sugar when possible. Set a bowl on a digital scale, tare it to zero and add sugar until the recipe’s gram amount is reached.
Pack brown sugar only when directed. The packed brown sugar conversion on this page assumes the sugar is pressed firmly into the measuring cup and holds its shape when released.
Do not pack granulated or confectioners’ sugar. Level granulated sugar gently; for confectioners’ sugar, follow whether the recipe says sifted or unsifted because that affects volume.

Packed Brown Sugar

Brown sugar contains moisture and molasses, so many recipes call for it to be packed. This page uses the packed light-or-dark brown sugar reference value.

Confectioners’ Sugar

The calculator value is for unsifted confectioners’ sugar. Sifting aerates powdered sugar and changes the amount that fits into a cup.

Which Sugar Conversion Should You Use?

Everyday Baking Sugars

  • Granulated white sugar: the default general-purpose sugar on this page.
  • Brown sugar, packed: choose for packed light or dark brown sugar measurements.
  • Confectioners’ sugar: choose for powdered sugar when measured unsifted.
  • Superfine / caster sugar: choose for finer-grained sugar used in delicate baking and desserts.

Coarse and Specialty Sugars

  • Demerara and turbinado: coarse sugars with distinct cup weights.
  • Coconut and maple sugar: alternative granulated sugars with their own density.
  • Sparkling and pearl sugar: decorating sugars; use their measured reference values.
  • Non-melting or sticky bun sugar: specialty products included for measurement conversion only.

Frequently Asked Sugar Conversion Questions

How many cups is 100 grams of granulated sugar?

Using this page’s standard of 198 grams per US cup, 100 grams of granulated white sugar is approximately 0.5051 US cups, or about 1/2 cup.

How many cups is 200 grams of sugar?

For granulated white sugar, 200 grams is approximately 1.0101 US cups. The result changes for packed brown sugar, confectioners’ sugar or another sugar type.

How many grams are in 1 cup of granulated sugar?

This chart uses 198 grams per US cup of granulated white sugar. A cup of packed brown sugar or unsifted confectioners’ sugar has a different weight.

Is 1 cup of brown sugar the same weight as 1 cup of white sugar?

No. The reference values used here are 213 grams per packed US cup of brown sugar and 198 grams per US cup of granulated white sugar.

Is confectioners’ sugar measured before or after sifting?

The confectioners’ sugar conversion in this calculator is based on unsifted confectioners’ sugar. Follow the recipe instruction when it specifically asks for sifted sugar.

Are ounces of sugar the same as fluid ounces?

No. Ounces in these charts are dry weight ounces measured on a scale. Fluid ounces measure volume. This converter uses dry weight ounces for sugar weight conversions.

Can I substitute another sugar using the same converted measurement?

Not automatically. A correct weight conversion does not account for sweetness, moisture, crystal size, browning or how a sugar dissolves in a recipe.

Conversion Methodology

This converter uses published ingredient weight references for the listed sugar types. The default granulated white sugar standard is 1 US cup = 198 grams. Volume relationships use a practical culinary US cup of 240 mL, with 16 US tablespoons or 48 US teaspoons per cup. Metric and imperial cup results are calculated by scaling volume from the selected sugar’s US-cup basis.

Accuracy note: Sugar volume conversions are practical recipe estimates. Results can vary with crystal size, packing, humidity, sifting and product formulation. When precision matters, weigh the sugar in grams.
