Salt Type Conversion Comparison

Salt types do not weigh the same by volume. This calculator uses published tablespoon weights for table salt and two common kosher salts, then extends the same measurement basis to teaspoons and cups.

Important: Salt volume substitutions can noticeably affect flavor. One tablespoon of table salt is not interchangeable by volume with one tablespoon of Diamond Crystal kosher salt. When a recipe gives salt by weight, using the stated gram quantity avoids the volume difference.

How to Convert Salt Measurements

Convert grams to teaspoons

Teaspoons = Grams ÷ Grams per Teaspoon

Example: 15 g table salt ÷ 6 = 2.5 US teaspoons.

Convert teaspoons to grams

Grams = Teaspoons × Grams per Teaspoon

Example: 2 US teaspoons table salt × 6 = 12 grams.

For dry weight conversions, 1 ounce = approximately 28.35 grams and 1 pound = approximately 453.59 grams. For standard US culinary volume, 1 cup equals 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.

US Cups, Metric Cups and Imperial Cups

Recipes may use different cup sizes. A US culinary cup is treated as 240 mL on this page, while a metric cup is 250 mL and an imperial cup is 284 mL. Since salt crystals occupy volume differently, changing either the salt type or the cup standard changes cup-based weight results.

Metric and imperial cup salt amounts are scaled from the selected salt’s US-cup reference. Granule size, settling and brand variation mean volume-to-weight conversions remain practical approximations.

How to Measure Salt Correctly

Salt is usually used in small quantities, so a difference of only a few grams can noticeably change a recipe. Table salt, Morton kosher salt and Diamond Crystal kosher salt have different crystal structures and do not fill a teaspoon at the same weight.

Use the salt named by the recipe. Before converting a volume measurement, identify whether the recipe calls for table salt, a specific brand of kosher salt or another salt.

Weigh salt when precision matters. For bread dough, brines, curing or scaling large recipes, use grams to avoid differences caused by crystal size.

Level spoon measurements. Fill a measuring spoon without compressing the salt and level the surface for a repeatable volume amount.

Convert substitutions before adding. If the available salt differs from the recipe salt, convert the amount first rather than swapping the same spoon quantity automatically.

Fine Table Salt

Small, dense crystals pack more weight into the same spoon volume. This page uses table salt as its default because it gives a clear base reference for common conversions.

Kosher Salt

Kosher salt is not a single volume standard. Morton kosher salt and Diamond Crystal kosher salt differ enough that the calculator keeps them as separate selectable options.

Which Salt Conversion Should You Use?

Cooking and Baking

Table salt: select when a recipe lists table salt, fine salt or does not specify a kosher salt brand.
Morton kosher salt: select when a recipe explicitly calls for Morton kosher salt.
Diamond Crystal kosher salt: select when the recipe specifies Diamond Crystal.

When Weight Is Better

Brines: weight-based salinity is more consistent than spoon measurements.
Bread dough: grams help maintain accurate baker’s percentages.
Batch recipes: weighing prevents small volume differences from multiplying.
Brand swaps: equal gram amounts are clearer than equal spoon amounts.
